Finca Maravilla is a small, working family homestead.

We are home to a small herd of Saanen goats, a horse, a pot-bellied pig, a flock of chickens, ducks, quail, and a host of cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, fish, a newt, and a tortoise.

Our philosophy is always to foster nature’s processes, to work alongside nature, and to follow her lead.

Our gardens are all no-till, no dig, and are built using compost from the poop of our farm animals. Our once rocky and barren soil is now rich, dark humus, where we encourage self-seeding and nurture wild, edible ‘weeds’ (such as amaranth, purslane, phyllanthus niruri (‘stone-breaker’), wild tropical nettles, ricinus (castor oil plant), mimosa pudica (morivivi)), as well as planting a wide range of vegetables and culinary herbs.

We do not grow vegetables for sale, we operate on a family homestead model, aiming to source our greens, fruits, and a large amount of our fats and proteins from our own land. We adhere to the four principle tenets of permaculture: earth care, people care, animal care, fair share. In this we ensure that we respect the earth in every action we take on the farm and that we work within the laws and processes of nature herself; we feed our humans and animals and make medicines to support health and treat simple conditions; and we share our excess with our community.

This is a journey that we share with our wider circle and our community, through nourishing foods, access to local, folk medicines and knowledge, and immersive learning experiences for children and their families.
